Social media literacy to guide you through the digital age.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS IMPACTING OUR

Attention

Health

Wellbeing

The average person’s attention span has dropped by 25% in the last two decades, with studies showing frequent social media users now switch tasks nearly every three minutes.

Studies suggest a concerning link between social media use and poorer mental health outcomes. Excessive smartphone use has also been linked to declines in attention span, memory, critical thinking, and learning outcomes.

For the first time in generations, young people are experiencing higher levels of anxiety and unhappiness — a trend that coincides with the rise of smartphones and constant connectivity.

Democracies

Fake news has been found to spread six times faster than the truth on social media, infecting public discourse and polarising societies.

The need for social
media literacy.

We are living in the noisiest time in human history, surrounded by relentless information overload.

Every day, we’re bombarded with low-quality digital distractions that chew up our time and attention while offering little in return.

Algorithms designed to maximise engagement flood our screens with extreme and polarising content, while influencers and advertisers compete to shape opinions, and push products. Meanwhile, AI-generated content, fake news and misinformation spread unchecked across social media platforms, making it harder than ever to separate fact from fiction.

It's an ever-evolving landscape that most adults struggle to understand. Yet from an early age, children are being left to navigate these platforms alone, despite knowing nothing about how they work, or how to protect themselves from harmful content.

It’s time to change that.

MediaMaps uses social media literacy education to empower students to understand complex digital environments and make informed choices about how to best navigate them.

Our approach aligns students, teachers, and parents in the battle against addictive technology, ensuring that all stakeholders work together to promote healthier digital habits.
